VMware OVF Tool (VMware Open Virtualization Format Tool)

Contributor(s): Julia Anderson

The VMware OVF Tool  is a command-line utility that allows administrators to import and export Open Virtualization Format (OVF) packages to and from VMware products. An OVF package is a group of files required for importing a virtual machine.

Administrators can use the OVF tool to distribute and import both virtual machines (VMs) and vApps. For example, an administrator who creates a virtual machine within VMware vSphere, can use the OVF Tool to export the VM into an OVF package which can be installed locally or distributed to another organization. The OVF Tool is also useful for performing file format conversions, such as changing an OVF or OVA file to a .VMX file.

As of this writing, the OVF Tool is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.
