Socialcast gives VMware a social collaboration platform to go along with its email (Zimbra), presentation (SlideRocket) and online backup (Mozy) offerings. But if VMware wants to offer a true alternative in the enterprise applications market, it will have to beef up its portfolio even more, especially around word processing and spreadsheets.

On this episode of This Week in Virtualization, our editors discuss the VMware-Socialcast acquisition with Lew Smith, director of business development and virtualization solutions at Interphase Systems, a VMware partner in Plymouth Meeting, Pa. They also discuss VMware’s overall foray into the enterprise applications market and how it ties in with the company’s core server and desktop virtualization businesses.

This podcast also features news on the latest Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 beta and Netuitive’s support for Microsoft Hyper-V.
