“vmware” command which has historically showed version numbers with vmware -v. From ESX 2.5.2 and on-wards you can use vmware –new-sn and vmware –newsmp-sn to enter serial numbers like so:

  1. Logon to the Service Console as ROOT
  2. Type:vmware –new-sn XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

    and
  3. vmware –new-smp-sn XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
