The top 10 PowerCLI scripts for vSphere administrators

Shut down VMs before the lights go out

When the power goes out in the data center and the facility doesn't have a generator to keep the lights on, then you can pretty much count on seeing many "Unexpected Shutdown" warnings when your hosts and VMs finally come back online. This was one of the major reasons I developed this PowerCLI script to automatically shut down a data center full of VMs.

After the script has disabled high availability, lowered vSphere Dynamic Resource Scheduler (DRS) automation levels and shut down our VMs, it continues to shut down our hosts as well.

When the power returns, there is a companion script I developed that will power the data center back on.
